Cardiovascular Epidemiology and Risk Factors

Introduction

Program 3 has been designed with the objective of strengthening the interaction between clinical, epidemiological and basic research groups within the CIBERCV.

The purpose of Program 3 on Cardiovascular Epidemiology and Risk Factors, is to investigate the mechanism that link cardiovascular risk factors to the serious diseases they entail, such as ischemic heart disease and cerebrovascular disease.

Coordinated multidisciplinary research at population level on the genetic and molecular mechanisms implicated in this group of diseases, should lead to the paramount outcome of the Program 3 of reducing their high impact on society and their economic burden on health care. The ambition of Program 3 is as well to lead the cardiovascular prevention research and implementation efforts in Spain. To make this objective possible we count on the contributions of excellent research groups with solid experience and the conviction that the results must be translated through knowledge transfer to the industrial sector to foster innovation and development.

Lines of research

The research in this program is organized in two lines:

1) Epidemiology, cohorts, risk factors and risk functions. The aim of this line is to determine the burden of cardiovascular diseases and their risk factors in our population, to develop or improve current tools to estimate cardiovascular risk and to assess the effectiveness of preventive treatments or interventions.

2) Population studies and the genetic/epigenetic basis of complex cardiovascular traits. The aim of this line is to unravel the genetic/epigenetic mechanisms related to ischemic heart disease and its risk factors, to finally identify determinants and modulators of these traits and improve prevention strategies.
